Access

Park your car at the free parking lot at the trailhead. The road is not in great shape, but if you go slow you'll be fine. The parking lot is also quite small and when we arrived at 7am it was already almost full.

There is no public transportation access.

Trail description

Soon after the trailhead you'll have your first river crossing. Be careful when it rained a lot as the water might be high. There is a rope here to help you across. We had high water levels and took our shoes off.

After the crossing you'll soon start climbing up through the forest with steep switchbacks. This part is not very interesting, but it doesn't take too long either.

It took us about 2h to the first peak (Shishigoyanokashira), then 1:30min to the second one (Nanatsugoyayama) and then a bit more than an hour to the third one (Daigentasan).

The section between the 2nd and 3rd peak was very overgrown with bamboo when we went. Was not easy to spot the trail at times.

Before Daigenta there are a couple of ropes/chains, but they are not really needed.

From Daigenta we needed another 3h back to the trailhead.

We did this hike in a bigger group so you could definitely be able to walk it faster.

I think this hike is a great option if you are in Niigata/Gunma and it's a lot less busy than other hikes in the area because you need a car.
