Tsumago

The trail from Magome to Tsumago is part of the historic Nakasendo route, which once connected Tokyo and Kyoto. The path offers a scenic walk through the forest, linking the two well-preserved towns of Magome and Tsumago. Spring and fall are the best seasons for this route, as summer temperatures can be very high. The trail can be completed as a day trip from Nagoya, or an overnight stay in either town allows for a more relaxed experience.

Access

Car

Park in Tsumago, then take the bus to Magome and walk back to Tsumago. The bus stop is right accross the parking lot. Bus takes about 30min and costs 600Y. Unless you go during summer or Golden Week the first bus is at 10:19. Times are also on google maps.

Public transportation

Take the train to Nagiso Station, then the bus to Magome and walk to Tsumago or all the way back to Nagiso Station (extra 40min). If not take the bus from Tsumago back to Nagiso Station. You can also do the same thing from Nakatsugawa Station.

Another option is by Highway bus from Tokyo and then use the same bus as above to get back to Magome.

Trail description

The trail starts in Magome-juku, a well-preserved post town with traditional wooden houses and stone-paved streets. From there, it climbs through cedar forests and terraced rice fields. The path is well-maintained, with stone steps and wooden boardwalks in some sections, making the ascent to Magome Pass (790 m) no problem even for casual walkers or kids.

After reaching the pass, the trail begins a steady descent. About 1.5 km along the way, you’ll reach Medaki Waterfall, a small waterfall with a shrine nearby. A little further is Odaki Waterfall, a larger fall with a viewing platform, both offering some nice photo spots.

Around halfway along the trail is the Tateba Tea House, a traditional stop where tea and light snacks are available. It's a good place for a break. The trail then continues downhill through forested paths and occasional sections along quiet mountain streets. It ends in Tsumago-juku, another historic post town with traditional wooden houses, stone streets, and a well-preserved Edo-period atmosphere.

Accomodation

Accommodation in Magome and Tsumago is limited. While some options appear on booking platforms, if they are fully booked you need to use Google Maps to find more local guesthouses and contact them directly through their websites.
